Artist's Statement
Jan Richardson grew up in Columbus, Ohio where she received her degree from The Ohio State University in Art Education. After college she relocated to Indiana for a few years, and then in 1976, moved on to Madison, Wisconsin, where she now resides with her husband. Like so many others, the art student's dreams were met with the realities of supporting a home and family, so she received her Master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration from University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked for the state and subsequently for the University for 24 years. Since she retired seven years ago, she has devoted her time to creating and improving her artwork. She takes a classical approach to drawing and painting which was not part of her earlier training and has proven to be both challenging and rewarding.

Although she has done some still lifes and landscapes, her primary interest lies in portraiture. The oil paintings shown here are of individuals including local musicians, shopkeepers, relatives, and friends who modeled at the Atwood Atelier for anywhere from 3 to 12 hours. Working with live models has allowed her to learn more about the individual and his/her story. In so doing, it has helped her capture a better likeness and portrayal of the individual’s personality and interests. See more of her work at
